Abu Dhabi - UAE, 2009 PATIO HOUSE Sustainable residential neighbourhood The project proposal for built plot divisions in Abu Dhabi presents the objective of offering housing solutions that are both differentiated and complex, starting from ideas based on the concepts of flexibility for building types, a clear recognizability and characterization of architectural elements and an in-depth study of sustainable architecture which aims to contain and limit energy costs. The starting idea was to superimpose a layout plan for a tripartite housing scheme in which every section is assigned specific functions that can also be interchangeable, along with the central element of the inner courtyard, as an important part of traditional Arabic and Mediterranean homes. Keeping in line with the chosen building typology, the structure presents a system that is made up of load-bearing dividers, which determine the partition of the home and distinguish its different functional sections, and by Catalan vaults, which strongly characterize the interior space. The habitation is organized on two floors and the flat roof structure allows for an ample terrace surface that covers the house. In correspondence to the first floor a brise-soleil takes on the double function, visually as a recognizable architectural element, using patterns that reinterpret the decorative motives of Arab traditions, as well as structurally, as it creates a filter between the outside and the inside to guarantee the screening and shading of the building from direct sun-rays.
