THE CITY RE-FOUNDED
Observations in favor of a more participatory architecture

Participated project planning is above all a way to re-think public action in terms of relations with and among citizens, as well as their use of public spaces and the management of their environment and territory. The approach bases its principles on concepts of disseminated democracy, direct representation, and active citizenship: all terms that foresee the involvement of citizens within the issues that affect their lives and the livelihood of the institutions that represent them.
Public space is a physical place, yet it is also important for its symbolic relevance. In public spaces and in the way they are lived, perceived, and modified, a common identity is realized along with a strong idea of sharing, which characterizes a collectivity and guarantees its cohesion. With public administrations and its citizens alike, to adopt policies of participated project planning for the definition and transformation of important public spaces means to employ a fundamental instrument for the creation of a new and heightened awareness of the very roles and values on which “social contracts” are founded between citizens and institutions; a responsible growth, the encounter and respect with others, and the idea of a shared equality and reciprocity.
